Why You Expect Something Bad to Happen (Even When Everything Is Fine)
Sep 11, 2026
Do you brace yourself even when nothing is wrong? Does a quiet moment, a good week, a relationship that is finally going well, leave you waiting for the other shoe to drop instead of letting you rest in it?
If you expect something bad to happen almost as a reflex, I want you to know that this is not pessimism, and it is not a lack of faith. It is a nervous system doing exactly what it was trained to do.
Somewhere, at some age and stage, calm was not actually safe. Maybe it was the quiet before an unpredictable parent's mood shifted. Maybe it was a home where good news was often followed by bad, so you learned that relaxing was the moment right before something happened. Your body did the intelligent thing. It stopped trusting stillness, so that it would never be caught off guard again.
That protection made sense once. The trouble is that it does not know the danger has passed. It keeps scanning for the threat that shaped it, in a life that may be genuinely safe now, and it interprets ordinary good moments as suspicious instead of simply good.
In Spiritual Psychology, we would say an exiled part of you took on this job of constant bracing, and it has never been told it can stand down. It is not trying to ruin your peace. It is trying to keep you safe using the only strategy it ever learned.
Healing this is not about forcing yourself to think positively, or talking yourself out of the dread in the moment it shows up. It is about going back to the age and stage where bracing first became necessary, meeting that part of you directly, and letting it finally learn, through experience and not just logic, that it does not have to carry this watch alone anymore.
If this pattern of constant bracing feels connected to deeper anxiety, you may also want to read Searching for Anxiety Therapy? What Your Anxiety Is Actually Trying to Tell You.
This is the heart of the work I do with clients, through the lens of my training in Spiritual Psychology at the University of Santa Monica. If you are ready to let your nervous system finally believe that calm is safe, book your free soul aligned call and let's begin.
